Over the last ten years Old Goucher has implemented a number of green infrastructure projects. Our greening coordinator, Mateusz Rozanski, who specializes in climate resilience projects has been responsible for the design and implementation of many projects that focus on mitigation of heat stress and stormwater management.
Projects include
Streetscaping along major pedestrian corridors on 22nd, 23rd, 24th, and 25th Streets, Maryland Avenue, Charles Street, and Saint Paul Street in accordance with the Old Goucher Vision Plan.
Street tree planting coordinated with Baltimore Tree Trust, Baltimore City Forestry Division, and Tree Baltimore
Bioswale construction on 23rd and Saint Paul Street, the 2300 and 2100 blocks of Maryland Avenue, 2400 block of Charles Street, 24th and Morton Streets
New pocket parks: the Maryland Avenue Edge Park, Ning’s Garden, and Fensal Court
Vertical vegetation on facades as a way of cooling buildings (24th and Morton Street)
Facade gardens throughout the Old Goucher community
Installation of “pavers in dirt” to improve the health and size of the street trees
Street tree pruning (elevation of tree crowns, preventive pruning, creating tree “leaders”)
Corner planters
Introduction of more heat stress resilient species of street trees (trees from the South like live or laurel oaks)
